Hunger on the International Stage During COVID-19

Hunger on the International Stage During COVID-19

According to the U.S. Global Leadership Coalition, the “UN warns three dozen countries, including the Democratic Republic of Congo, Ethiopia, Nigeria, South Sudan, Syria, Venezuela, and Yemen could experience famines in 2021 which could lead to an additional 130 million people who will be facing starvation.”  Further information from the World Bank projects that an additional 33 million people could be at risk of hunger in low to middle income countries.

There have been supply chain disruptions due to COVID-19 which have increased consumer demand for food around the globe.  That has added to the food insecurity problem for 821 million people in low-income countries.  These individuals typically spend most of their income on food.

In an article from the BBC looking at COVID-19 in Brazil, it studies the issue of hunger worsening in city slums.  Brazil suffers from the world’s second-highest death toll from the pandemic with over 370,000 deaths.  Furthermore, a recent study found 60% of Brazilian households have suffered food insecurity and are lacking sufficient access to sources of food.  The article also shares that as the hospitals continue to fill up, the food lines grow longer, and the need becomes even greater.

In summary, food insecurity is one of the worst things to experience!  In a world with such abundance, it is so sad and hard to understand why so many people are suffering with hunger daily.  It is the goal of our organization (Fiorenza’s Food For Friends F4), to bring hope, love, and compassion to all ends of the world by providing meals to those most in need.  We believe in creating a world without hunger and we are committed to accomplishing this vision one person and one meal at a time.  Please reach out to F4 to volunteer and or donate at Give@F4service.org and Follow and Like Us on Social Media.
