Eight Healthy Holiday Nutrition Tips

Do you have health and nutrition goals?  Don’t let the holidays derail your efforts.

Follow these tips to help you stay healthy and feel good while enjoying the holidays.

  1. Don’t skip meals to save up for a feast. This practice can backfire causing you to be overly hungry and possibly over-eat. Have a filling snack before you leave for a party such as Greek yogurt, or fruit with nuts.
  2. Distance yourself from the food. At a party, don’t stand next to the food table. You may mindlessly reach for food as you socialize.
  3. Make room for colorful vegetables. Filling half your plate with veggies provides not only vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants, but fiber to help make you full. Veggies are a great appetizer, too.
  4. Savor your seasonal splurges. Choose moderate portions of a couple of holiday favorites instead of foods that are available throughout the year.
  5. Eat slowly, be in-tune with your feeling of fullness. Eat until you are satisfied, not overly full.
  6. Be wise with beverage choices. Choose water, seltzer, and other low-calorie beverages instead of festive drinks. Drink alcohol in moderation and for every alcoholic drink have a glass of water.
  7. Keep moving. Continue with your exercise routine throughout the holidays. Taking a walk with family before or after dinner is a terrific way to spend time together.
  8. Focus on what really matters, friends, family, and the festive celebration!
